Environmental Education in Action

Delta Environmental Centre is an environmental education, training and consultation organisation.

It is an independent, registered, non-profit company that aims, through innovative education and training programmes, to enable people to improve their environment by promoting the management and sustainable use of all resources, in line with the South African Constitution.

We aim to encourage participation in environmental action projects by sharing appropriate knowledge and developing responsible values and attitudes.

We offer accredited and non-accredited skills courses and workshops for educators and environmental practitioners, as well as running experiential, curriculum-based programmes for learners from Grades 1 to 12.

Our venues are available for hire. The Auditorium seats 180 and the Function Room is an excellent venue for launches, lunches, and workshops.

About Wim Spronk :

From a very early age I have had this fascination for nature subjects and in later life developed an interest in photography which later became filmmaking and more recently video production. Combining these two hobbies has been a life enriching experience for me. When I came to South Africa in 1946 a whole new world opened up for me and I was fortunate in having had several opportunities to visit interesting places and to witness and record amazing aspect of nature. My programme “Nature and Video (No 1) is the first of a series of three presentations of an hour each.

NATURE AND VIDEO ( NO 1)

If you have an interest in birds, insects, reptiles and nature in general you should not miss this morning. Wim Spronk will present a selection of his prize winning nature videos and tell us some amusing stories of what happened behind the scenes and how the videos were made. His programme will include “The Creator of the Moon” the bushmen believed that the Praying Mantis created the moon and here we see the complete life cycle of this remarkable insect. “The First Fisherman” shows how a Green Backed Heron “steals” the bait from a fisherman and uses it to catch his own, “Garden Visitors” shows the wild life that can exist in a garden not more than a third of an acre and “Beneath the Surface” shows a Dwarf Bream looking after its offspring of 60-70 tiny fish that flee into their mother’s mouth at the first signs of danger. We also see how a Dragon Fly larvae catches fish under water before climbing out and changing into the Dragon Fly as we know it.
