During 1997, Delta has worked with Koornfontein Mines in developing an innovative approach in the use of Industrial Theatre. With Delta providing the theatrical expertise and the environmental input, and the mine supplying the actors and providing the culture and content, these plays have been enormously effective in the communication of important information. The impact on the workforce was significant. Feedback confirmed that the audience did not only understand and enjoy the performances but that it made them think and understand, for the very first time, their own involvement and responsibilities. |
Delta believes that the success of the project lies in the partnership between the organisation and Delta, and that the use of employees in the productions was an integral part of this. Employees identified with the characters in the productions because they were true to life and the actors came from amongst themselves. In 1995 these employee-actors received the Ingwe award for their contribution to safety. They also had the chance to perform in front of a very select audience at the Chamber of Mines 1995 Safety Congress at the CSIR.
They were at a later stage again invited to perform their "Four Steps to Safety" production at the HSRC Conference. In view of the success of this production within the workforce and at executive level it seems that Industrial Theatre, Delta's way is a very powerful and effective means of communication. |
