Interesting Facts
* 239
species of birds have been recorded in Delta Park, Johannesburg,
over the past twenty years (approximately25% of all the species
recorded in South Africa!)
* The past twelve months have
continued to emphasize how amazingly rich the birdlife is in
this spectacular asset for the citizens of Johannesburg.
Since commencing the intensive
survey of the Park five years ago on the 1st January, 2002, an
amazing 180 bird species have been recorded - including 20 new
birds for the area and also a number which were last recorded
over twenty years ago.
* January added Bronze
Mannikin (05/01/2006) and Pallid Swift (10/01/2006) -
a national rarity, as new species for the Park; with Alpine
Swift also being recorded after a long absence.
* Shikra (or Little-banded
Goshawk) was recorded for the first time on 15/03/2006 and
the 30/03/2006 saw the first sighting of Ayres' Hawk Eagle in
the Park for over twenty seven years.
* April brought the only sighting
of Squacco Heron during the survey - and only the third
time this species has been recorded in Delta Park in the last
twenty five years!
* June (16/06/2006) saw the
addition of Red-headed Finch to the Delta Park list for
the first time. This species has been steadily colonizing
Johannesburg's suburbs and it was only a matter of time before
we recorded it in the Park. So far however the June record has
been the only one for this bird. June also brought records of African
Harrier Hawk (or Gymnogene) and Peregrine Falcon -
both rare sightings for the Park.
* August brought only the 4th
sighting of Southern Grey Hornbill, while November saw
the first record of Banded Martin (02/11/2006) together
with another sighting of a Park rarity - the Brown-backed
Honeybird (or Sharp-billed Honeyguide) on 29/11/2006.
* The year finished with great
excitement in the form of an adult Great Spotted Cuckoo -
yet another first for the Park which was recorded from the Tea
Garden next to the Centre building on 24/12/2006; and the first
record of Red-chested Flufftail in over 28 years from the
bottom of the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary.
* Over
1000 learners from all over Gauteng completed an educational
tour of Rand Water's Purification Plant at Vereeniging,
facilitated by Education Officers from Delta Environmental
Centre and the WaterWise Education Team
* Delta Environmental Centre ran a series of workshops,
conducted school visits and hosted a Curriculum EXPO for
"Health and Sanitation" in schools: Rand Water
sponsored this project and they have also installed 1 000
toilets in Winterveldt in 2002/03.
