DELTA ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE / RHODES UNIVERSITY PRESENTS:
PARTICIPATORY COURSE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
FOR TEACHERS 1998 - 1999

INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
This introductory course provides participants with the opportunities to:

  • interact with other teachers on implementing environmental education in the school context;
  • develop appropriate teaching, communication and curriculum development skills;
  • explain, understand and critically reflect on their work through an exploration of environmental education theories and methods;
  • engage in the process of learning programme development through clarification of OBE in the South African context.

    WORKSHOP THEMES
    The workshops will cover the following key themes:

    • The Environment, Environmental Crisis and Responses
    • Environmental Education as a Response to the Crisis
    • EE and theories of Education, including OBE
    • Environmental Education Curriculum and Learning Programme Development within the OBE Curriculum Framework

    QUALIFICATIONS AWARDED
    Rhodes University will award the Rhodes Certificate in Environmental Education to participants who successfully complete the course. Successful completion requires full participation and attendance at all the workshop and tutorial sessions. Participants will also be required to show evidence of personal and professional growth through the way they carry out a range of tasks such as assignments, keeping of a journal and development of a School Policy File based on the course outcomes and negotiated assessment criteria.

    ENTRY CRITERIA
    The course is based on open-entry, open-exit model. This simply means that no special qualifications are required. Participants will however need to be self-motivated and in a position to commit time to attend all workshops and tutorials.

    CATEGORIES OF PARTICIPANTS
    There is place for only 30 participants. The course will seek participants from the four Gauteng "nodes" with room for applicants from all over the country where applicable. It will be ideal if two teachers from a school apply as they will be able to give each other support to implement changes within their school and districts. At least one of the teachers should be an HOD or a principal as this will start to have and influence on the school management system.

  • WORKSHOPS
    There are six compulsory workshops through the course of 1998/1999. Workshops will be over weekends and school holidays. Most of them will involve overnight stays in and around Gauteng. Course co-ordinators will make necessary arrangements for food and accommodation but participants are required to make their own transport arrangements to the venues. Most workshops will be 3 - 4 days. These workshops will start at 12 noon and end at the same time on the last day. There will also be weekend workshops which will start at 8h00 in the mornings and end at 17h00 in the afternoons. The dates for the workshops are as follows:
    *7 - 8 Nov. 1998 (Delta Environmental Centre)
    *16 - 17 Jan. 1999 (Delta Environmental Centre)
    *19 - 21 Feb. 1999 (Khabula Farm - Magaliesberg)
    *27 - 30 March 1999 (Venue to be determined)
    *8 - 9 April 1999 (Delta Environmental Centre)
    N.B. Please diarise these dates so as to avoid clashes with your other commitments as attendance is compulsory.

    TUTORIALS
    Tutorial sessions will be arranged between workshops. These are aimed at providing more personal and responsive support to the participants. The sessions will take place at a mutually agreed upon venue, date and time between the participants and their tutors.

    ASSIGNMENTS
    Assignments in the course should not be seen as an "add on" but as useful elements aimed at developing course outcomes such as personal growth and professional development. The view of assignments and assignment writing should be that of a process rather than a product. Assessment is criterion referenced and is based on the completion of assignments.

    COSTS
    Registration fee: R400
    Food and accommodation: 3 days or more will be R100. Weekends will be R50.
