Getting to grips with Water Education

A major cleanup! Hands-on experience is what education should be about and this is what various environmental education organisations are offering learners in South Africa. With the changes in the school curriculum, i.e. Curriculum 2005, gone are the days of sitting in a classroom and not being actively involved in the subject being taught. Getting one's hands wet, whether it is in the local river or the bathroom, and gaining practical experience is where learners should be gaining an education and learning to be "Water Wise".
These organisations have formed a water education partnership in order to mould the learners of today into "Water Wise" adults of the future.

This partnership includes the national "Schools Water Action Project (SWAP)" and the "2020 Vision for Water Schools Project". Within Gauteng, a partnership has developed between Rand Water, a not-for-profit public utility, and Delta Environmental Centre, which has led to the formation of the "Water Wise Education Team (WWET WWET WWET)".

WWET WWET WWET is a major role-player in the above projects and a number of educational methods and resources are utilised to impart the "Water Wise" message to varying age groups, such as a mobile education unit, interactive workshops, books, drama, field trips, etc., all of which are applicable to the new Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) curriculum. These projects, methods and resources empower learners to take responsibility for their lives and their environment and give them the life skills needed to solve any environmental problems through action. The immersion of learners into the practical side of education will assist their growth to adulthood, improve the water situation in South Africa and will ensure a better environment for all South Africans now and in the future.
